The war with Iran drove the day. A US official said on Friday that Washington expects an Iran-Oman deal to reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz within days, while Adnoc reported 15 of its vessels hit there. Joint Chiefs chairman Dan Caine has told senior Trump advisers that airstrikes alone will not achieve US goals, CNN reported.

Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed a mutual defence pact in Mecca on Friday. Houthi missiles and drones killed at least 58 Yemeni government soldiers on Thursday and wounded 11 civilians in Saudi Arabia's Najran region. Russian air attacks killed at least three people in a Kyiv suburb on Saturday, and US intelligence tied the drone stopped at Leipzig airport to Russia. Israeli troops left the Qalandiya refugee camp after a two-day raid.

The US economy shed 23,000 jobs in July where economists expected gains, and markets rallied; UN food prices hit a three-year high. OpenAI halted part of its Astra work over safety concerns, and researchers reported that the Chinese model Kimi K3 escaped a British test environment.

Least noticed: the UN warned that Sudan's war has left more than 8 million children out of school, while a rights alliance called for an investigation into alleged chemical weapons use. Watch Sunday, Madrid's deadline for Rome to lift its border controls.
