A US helicopter fired on a Panama-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman on Tuesday to enforce Washington's blockade of Iranian ports, and President Donald Trump claimed full control of the Strait of Hormuz. Oil rose again on Wednesday, and Iran plans to join the BRICS development bank.

Russian missiles and drones killed at least ten across Ukraine overnight into Tuesday, and Kyiv says North Korean missiles were used. A Damascus court sentenced ousted president Bashar al-Assad and eight others to death the same day. Missiles set a cargo ship ablaze in the Bab al-Mandeb, killing crew and rescuers; Yemen's recognised government blames the Houthis. North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile on Wednesday, and Colombia's toll from Monday's magnitude 7.4 earthquake passed 200.

Nvidia and six Wall Street firms are assembling at least $500bn for AI data centres, and Intel upsized its share sale to about $20bn. Chinese car sales fell 21.1 percent in July as exports jumped 88 percent. Meta goes on trial on Wednesday over claims it designed Facebook and Instagram to addict minors.
