Death toll passes 50 after magnitude 7.7 quake off Flores

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake off Indonesia's Flores island killed at least 51 people on Saturday. The toll rose through the day as rescuers reached outlying villages.

Indonesia's disaster agency BNPB raised its count through Saturday, 15 August, from five dead to 38 and then 47, before Folha de S.Paulo and The National reported at least 51 killed, 36 seriously and 77 lightly injured. Of the first 47 confirmed deaths, most were in Manggarai (24) and East Manggarai (17), the rest in Sikka, Ngada, Ende and West Manggarai. Agency head Suharyanto said rescuers recovered 16 bodies from a landslide in the village of Reok in Manggarai.

Nagekeo still cut off

Emergency teams had not reached Nagekeo, the region closest to the epicentre, where landslides blocked roads and a team was trying to arrive by ferry, said Fathur Rahman of the Maumere rescue agency. Power cuts disrupted communications and the search, provincial police chief Rudi Darmoko said.

Schools and clinics damaged

Preliminary BNPB figures list 157 homes heavily damaged, 87 schools, 18 health facilities, five places of worship and six office buildings. Komodo airport was affected but remains operational, and the IFRC is preparing aid for about 2,000 people in shelters.
