Russian drones kill boy and grandparents near Kyiv

7 sources

Russian drones destroyed a family home in the Brovary district near Kyiv early on Saturday, killing a three-year-old boy and his grandparents. At least one more person was killed in the capital itself.

What happened

  • Three other family members and a neighbour who came to help were hospitalised; the house was reduced to rubble.
  • Zelenskyy said the death in Kyiv came in a strike involving six ballistic missiles on civilian infrastructure.
  • Ukraine's air force says it downed or intercepted 135 of 151 drones launched overnight, plus guided missiles.
  • Ukraine struck another oil refinery inside Russia the same day, the Associated Press reported.
  • Alerts covered the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Cherkasy and Dnipropetrovsk regions; more explosions followed on Saturday evening.

The view from outside

Outlets outside the war parties add what both sides leave out: AP reports that repeated Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities have disrupted fuel supplies and unsettled Russians. Serbia's Politika cites unconfirmed claims from Russian military sources that Ukraine's air force downed no missile during the evening wave.

What could happen next

  • Zelenskyy appealed on X for more sanctions, anti-ballistic capabilities and interceptor missiles; no commitments are reported.
  • Ukraine lacks interceptors for its US-made Patriots, the ammunition made scarcer by the war in Iran.
  • Kyiv seeks Starlink permission from Elon Musk to guide strikes at Russian missile launchers, or domestic Patriot production.
  • What was hit in Kyiv is unverified independently in the available reporting.
How the camps see it
  • Russia: The Defence Ministry says its forces hit a defence enterprise and a fuel and lubricants depot in Kyiv with high-precision land-based weapons.

  • Ukraine: Kyiv says Russia is pounding homes and civilian infrastructure and calls for sanctions to stop the production of ballistic missiles.
