Truce mediators condemn Israeli strikes as Gaza death toll rises

5 sources

An Israeli air strike killed two Palestinians in a car in Gaza City on Monday evening, medics said. The truce's mediators, Türkiye, Egypt and Qatar, condemned Israel's ceasefire violations the same day.

What happened

  • Israeli strikes across Gaza on Sunday, 2 August, killed at least 17 to 19 people, tallies vary.
  • Medics recovered two bodies from the vehicle in the Sheikh Ajlin area and took them to Al-Shifa Hospital.
  • Israel's military says weekend strikes in Deir al-Balah killed a Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander, Mahmoud Fatair.
  • Gaza's health ministry counts 73,375 dead since October 2023, at least 1,250 of them since the October 2025 truce.

The view from outside

Russia's TASS frames the strikes against Trump's announcement of 30 July that a deal on the complete disarmament of Hamas formations had been reached. Germany's FAZ leads on the children among the dead.

What could happen next

  • Israel has not said publicly whether it accepts the US roadmap that Hamas and other Palestinian factions say they have accepted.
  • Phase two, including the confinement of weapons, awaits an official response from Board of Peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov and the mediators.
  • Mladenov and adviser Aryeh Lightstone had urged Netanyahu to halt attacks before Monday's Gaza City strike.
How the camps see it
  • Israel: Its military says the strikes killed Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad commanders, including one it links to the 7 October 2023 attack and to holding a hostage.

  • Palestinian factions: Hamas says it and the other factions remain committed to the agreed second phase and are waiting for a clear official answer on its implementation.
