Symbolic imageTrump keeps Iran strike option open as Qatar-mediated talks continue
Trump says the US must still hit "one or two" Iranian nuclear sites, while talks in Doha ran a third day. Gulf states fear renewed war after Tuesday's midterms.
Trump said on Saturday, 31 October, that the US has "knocked out their nuclear" programme but still must strike "one or two sites", naming Pickaxe Mountain. He has said there will be no new attacks before the vote, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said no decision has been made. Trump backed outreach by Vice President JD Vance to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
Doha talks
Iranian negotiators met Qatari mediators in Doha for a third day on Sunday. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days of a deal is under discussion, with no conclusion yet. Sources told the Jerusalem Post that Tehran wants sanctions lifted before nuclear limits, while Washington wants nuclear issues addressed from the outset.
Tehran warns of wider response
Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei ordered the armed forces on Saturday to prepare to respond to any attack, and Rezaei promised "devastating blows". Deputy Parliament Speaker Ali Nikzad said Iran will not negotiate its nuclear programme.
Gulf braces
Egypt's foreign minister Badr Abdelatty warned a second round would be "more dangerous, more destructive". The UAE's Anwar Gargash said the region is "braced for the worst" if positions are not bridged.
