Oleshky truce expires as strikes continue

10 sources

A six-day truce in Oleshky expired on Sunday evening after roughly 700 to 750 residents left. Russian strikes and Ukrainian attacks on energy sites continued.

Residents of Russian-held Oleshky reached Ukrainian territory late on Saturday, 31 October, after a 19-hour journey via Crimea, Russia and Belarus. Le Monde counts about 700 evacuees; a Newsmax reporter cited by FAZ says about 750 registered, with 11 buses going to Ukraine and four to Russia. Ombudspersons Dmytro Lubinets (Ukraine) and Jana Lantratova (Russia) coordinated the operation, which Handelsblatt says Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV brokered. Both sides agreed to further aid missions, as conditions in Oleshky remain very hard.

Strikes and cyberattacks

Russian strikes killed three people on Sunday, local authorities say, in Vinnytsia and Sumy regions. Le Monde reports an attack on the Kstovo refinery, one of Russia's largest. Ukraine's air force said its alert app was hacked, and Ukraine's strategic communications centre blames Moscow. Russia's emergency ministry reported a cyberattack on its own app and named no culprit.

Patriots for refineries

Zelensky told Fox News that Ukraine would stop hitting Russian refineries for a month if Washington supplied Patriot interceptors for that month, after Trump demanded both sides spare energy sites. According to FAZ, Zelensky also confirmed that Ukraine, Russia and the US are preparing a joint meeting in mid-November, possibly in Turkey.
