Symbolic imageEbola outbreak passes 10,000 cases as Africa CDC warns of wider spread
Congo's health ministry reported 10,060 Ebola cases and 4,887 deaths on Tuesday. Africa CDC warns the virus could reach Europe without better preparedness.
Jean Kaseya, director general of Africa CDC, called the spread unprecedented, with three African regions affected for the first time. He compared the risk to Covid, when countries that saw no danger later became hotspots, and said all continents must raise preparedness. He was due to convene African health ministers on Wednesday to press for screening and testing at entry and exit points. The Bundibugyo outbreak, declared on 15 May in Ituri, is Congo's largest and deadliest.
Nigeria case under investigation
Nigeria confirmed an imported case in Abuja on 20 October; the 42-year-old patient was evacuated to Switzerland on 26 October. Premium Times calls her Ugandan-born and Abuja-based, Daily Sabah a Swiss woman who travelled to Uganda; authorities are still investigating how she was infected.
No approved vaccine or treatment
Kaseya expects vaccine trial results in three to six months. Unpaid health worker wages, equipment shortages, conflict and aid cuts hamper the response, the Guardian reports.
