Symbolic imageLula challenges Flávio Bolsonaro to open bank records as Meta faces bias claims
Lula offers to waive bank secrecy for himself and his family if Flávio Bolsonaro does the same before Sunday's run-off.
Lula made the offer in the debate on Sunday, 18 October, and repeated it on Tuesday in Maranhão, promising electoral authorities access to his and close relatives' bank and phone records. He had questioned how Bolsonaro paid for a 5.97 million reais home in Brasília; Bolsonaro answered "through work" and cites his pay as senator, business and legal activity and an earlier property sale. Bolsonaro had not responded to the challenge when Politika published.
Police inquiry
Brazilian media reported on Monday that federal police are investigating Bolsonaro in a money-laundering inquiry, the Guardian says; he denies corruption allegations and has never been convicted. Telesur adds that his home loan is examined in Operation Cumprimento Zero.
Meta under scrutiny
The electoral court doubled Meta's daily fine to 1 million reais after internal messages suggested Lula's Instagram posts could not be promoted for almost 24 hours in early October, Telesur reports. Meta told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that it treats both campaigns equally and reviews automated ad restrictions within two hours. AFP, via Al Jazeera, cites an anonymous source saying Lula will seek to disqualify Bolsonaro's campaign.
Other opinions
Telesur frames Bolsonaro as having backed away from the challenge; the Guardian notes that Lula's PT has also faced major corruption scandals.
