Symbolic imageOslo talks end without breakthrough before Witkoff's trip to Putin
Ukraine, Finland, Norway and US envoy Steve Witkoff held talks in Oslo on Tuesday. Witkoff is due to take the ideas to Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Wednesday.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who co-hosted the talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at Ukraine's request, said they made "genuine progress" on security and economic sticking points, but announced no breakthrough. Volodymyr Zelensky and Witkoff attended, Jared Kushner joined by video with the flu, along with European, EU and Nato representatives. Støre and Zelensky hope the ideas can pave the way to a Trump-Zelensky-Putin summit. Axios, via TASS, says the package includes freeing Stephen Hubbard, a 72-year-old American convicted in Russia for fighting for Ukraine.
Trump keeps up pressure
Trump said Zelensky "has to want to settle this war" and that the US has "got nothing back". He has pushed Kyiv to stop striking Russian refineries before next month's midterms; Zelensky offered a halt if Moscow stops hitting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
Warnings restored
Zelensky says US early warning of Russian ballistic missiles resumed after a call with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Washington denies ever withholding aid, the South China Morning Post reports.
Europe seeks a voice
European officials want influence after Trump lifted sanctions on Russian diesel this month and on Friday skipped further sanctions mandated by new legislation, the Financial Times reports.
