Night curfews calmed French cities, and the government will deploy soldiers and extra police before new protests on Saturday.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said on Tuesday, 20 October, that targeted curfews brought calm on Monday night after a weekend of rioting and looting. Paris extended its curfew around Les Halles and Place de la République, and Lyon, Toulouse and Marseille (for minors) kept restrictions in place. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said Sentinelle soldiers will take over duties from internal security forces to free police for Saturday's protests.
Courts and arrests
Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin put the number of people jailed at 123 (FT) to 150 (FAZ) after almost 3,000 arrests. Courts in several cities held special sessions for expedited trials.
Limoges arson suspect
Police arrested a 34-year-old man on Tuesday over the fire at Limoges town hall; Le Parisien, cited by FAZ, links him to Les Soulèvements de la Terre.
Insurers and retailers count the cost
Morningstar DBRS puts insured damage at just under €1.2 billion, according to FAZ.
Other opinions
FAZ stresses the left-wing background of the Limoges suspect; the FT stresses policing failures.
