China lodged a sharp protest with Japan over an offering by Prime Minister Takaichi to the Yasukuni shrine, Politika reports, quoting Mao Ning as calling the shrine a spiritual tool and symbol of Japanese militarists and their war of aggression. Joint drills involving about 45,000 Japanese troops and 12,000 US service members have begun, Kyodo reported, according to TASS.
