Alberta votes on staying in Canada, separatists expected to lose

7 sources

Albertans voted on Monday in a nonbinding referendum on staying in Canada or holding a second, binding independence vote. Polls pointed to defeat for the separatists, who say they will fight on.

Albertans voted on Monday, 19 October. Polls cited by dpa put support for staying at about 70% and for secession at roughly 20%, while Politika reports that fewer than a quarter back independence. The secession question was to be counted first, with results expected early Tuesday. Premier Danielle Smith called the vote under pressure from her United Conservative Party but did not campaign for independence. The Guardian reports that some of her supporters accuse her of betraying the movement.

Carney campaigns for unity

Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Calgary and Edmonton the week before and told a crowd: "This is not poker." He called a vote against Canada "a dangerous bluff". The Guardian reports that recent polls rate him Alberta's most popular politician.

EU ties feed separatist anger

FAZ reports from Okotoks that some separatists reject Carney's pursuit of closer ties with the EU. One voter, Mike Holmes, claims Brussels wants to send Canadians to war with Russia. FAZ notes that Carney is trying to cushion the effects of the economic war begun by the United States.
