Huawei announced on Monday that Qualcomm will pay to use its patents for the first time. The deal still needs US regulatory approval.
The agreement is a cross-licensing and patent acquisition deal covering 5G and AI technologies, Nikkei Asia reports. Huawei first paid to license Qualcomm patents in 2001, and if approved, the new deal would make Qualcomm the net payer for the first time. Reuters describes the licence as multi-year, and Bloomberg reports that it includes patents on Huawei's LogicFolding chip technology. Nikkei Asia calls it a breakthrough for the Chinese company's intellectual property portfolio and expects a regulatory review in the US.
