Symbolic imageTurkish-owned grain ship sinks off Romania, two dead, Ukraine blames Russian drones
A Turkish-owned ship carrying corn sank in Romania's economic zone on Monday, killing two crew members. Ukraine blames two Russian drones, while Romania has not confirmed the cause.
Romania's interior ministry said the ship caught fire and sank 30 nautical miles south of Sfantu Gheorghe on Monday, 5 October, and that 11 crew members were rescued. Romanian media reported a drone strike, which officials did not confirm at first. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said two Russian drones hit the vessel in neutral waters and accused Moscow of choosing attacks over safe passage for civilian ships. According to Daily Sabah, he said the captain was among the dead, that Azerbaijani and Indian nationals were aboard, and that one rescued crew member was injured. Unconfirmed media reports cited by Handelsblatt say the ship was bound for Italy.
Russia claims its own strikes
Reuters reports that Russia says it struck two Ukrainian cargo vessels in the Black Sea on the same day. Further details were not available.
Pressure on Ukraine's grain trade
Russian strikes on ports and shipping are weighing on Ukraine's economy and grain exports.
