Spain checked 199 arrivals from Italy at its six largest airports on Saturday, the first day of retaliatory controls. Rome calls the step unacceptable and keeps its own checks.

Madrid's interior ministry said on Sunday, 9 August that officers screened passengers from twelve flights arriving from Italy, and, according to Handelsblatt, refused entry to ten people. An order signed by interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska cites a "serious, real and current threat to public order and internal security"; the checks run to 7 September, longer than Italy's, which started on 1 August and last at least until 15 August.

Rome and Madrid trade accusations

Italy's foreign minister Antonio Tajani told La Stampa on Sunday that Spain's reaction was "incomprehensible and completely unacceptable". Spain's José Manuel Albares called the scenes at Italian airports "intolerable" and "a torpedo fired at the hull of European unity".

Up to 11,000 still in Ceuta

Ceuta's mayor-president Juan Jesus Vivas told Onda Cero radio that 8,000 to 11,000 migrants may remain after the crossing of 30 July and urged faster returns via Tarajal. Madrid says about 72,000 entered and some 70,000 have returned to Morocco.

Blame for the surge

Handelsblatt reports that an EU commissioner holds tech companies partly to blame for the crisis in Ceuta.
