Paris opens inquiry into foreign links to bomb hoaxes as Italian minister reports pro-Russian hack

16 sources

Paris prosecutors are investigating whether foreign powers are behind the bomb hoaxes that disrupted European flights. Separately, Italy's Tajani says pro-Russian hackers published data on him and his family.

Paris prosecutors announced on Saturday, 7 November, an inquiry to identify the senders of the hoax emails and any link to "foreign powers". An Aer Lingus plane had been diverted to Évreux-Fauville on Thursday, and on Friday the prime minister's office reported four more alerts over France; three planes landed at Orly, one at Bordeaux, all without incident. Counts of affected aircraft differ: CNN reports about 20, RTVE at least 27. The Irish government called the wave a probable coordinated campaign. Claims sent to the Rome and Sofia airports came from "fighters of the male state", which seems to echo the name of a Russian ultranationalist movement, but its leader denies involvement. The Financial Times reports that European security agencies work on the hypothesis that pro-Kremlin activists or hacking groups produced the threats.

Italian minister's data on the dark web

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Saturday that pro-Russian hackers published personal data on him and his family and are willing to pay for more, which he links to Italy's support for Ukraine. Reuters saw screenshots of a list of 18 "citizens hostile to the Russian Federation", and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni blamed pro-Russian hackers. Il Fatto Quotidiano reports that the group NoName057(16), allegedly tied to Russian military intelligence, has offered money for such data since 26 October. Moscow has not commented.

Other opinions

Venezuela's Telesur reports the hoaxes and flight counts without naming Russia, noting that authorities have not confirmed whether all threats are connected.
