China's Communist Party confirmed on Thursday the expulsion of 33 officials, including former diplomat Liu Jianchao. It also promoted General Zhang Shengmin, described by the South China Morning Post as a key player in the anti-corruption drive that hit the military leadership, to the Politburo.
