Study links Indonesian haze to over 5,200 deaths as Singapore sends envoy

4 sources

A study released on Thursday attributes at least 5,200 deaths in Indonesia to this year's fires and haze. Singapore's foreign minister made a surprise visit to Jakarta to ease tensions.

The research group CREA says the deaths occurred in August and September, with people in Borneo and Sumatra hit hardest and the highest mortality risk in Central Kalimantan, Nikkei Asia reports. According to the outlet's photo caption from 24 October, fine-particle levels in Palangkaraya were more than 20 times the World Health Organization's threshold.

Malaysia counts the cost

A study for the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers puts losses at US$1.97 billion for 1 July to 22 October. It also estimates 1,700 premature deaths in Malaysia (95 per cent interval: 1,300 to 2,300), based on statistical models rather than confirmed fatalities, the South China Morning Post reports.

Singapore turns to quiet diplomacy

After days of terse exchanges, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan travelled to Jakarta to seek a direct channel to President Prabowo Subianto, the South China Morning Post reports. Analysts quoted there link the measured approach to rising nationalistic rhetoric in Indonesia.

Row over internet cable remark

Indonesia's communications minister Meutya Hafid urged calm after a former Singaporean nominated MP suggested Singapore could disrupt Indonesian internet access. She argued that any outage would cripple connectivity on both sides, according to the South China Morning Post.
