Symbolic imageEurope to release 42 million barrels as oil majors post record profits
France said on Thursday that Europe will release 42 million barrels of oil for short-term relief. Brent remains close to its Iran-war high.
Bloomberg reports the French announcement, while The Economist notes that Brent is near its war peak despite stronger Gulf exports. The Wall Street Journal reported that prices fell on Thursday, 29 October, as traders weighed US-Iran diplomacy. French government spokesperson and energy minister Maud Bregeon said Paris expects TotalEnergies to pass the benefit of the barrel release on to consumers and to keep capping its prices as long as the crisis lasts. TotalEnergies limits diesel to €2.25 a litre at its stations, while pump prices have risen above €2.35, according to Le Monde.
Majors report record quarters
Shell posted an adjusted profit of $10.8bn for July to September, up from $5.432bn a year earlier, and raised its quarterly buyback to $5bn from $3bn. TotalEnergies reported net profit of $8.3bn, more than double the year before, driven by record refining margins. Greenpeace criticised Shell's results, and Le Monde says the figures revived calls in France for a windfall tax.
Qatar hedges with US LNG
Reuters reports that QatarEnergy is buying US and other LNG to hedge against future Hormuz disruptions. Reuters also reports that Australia's Woodside will supply it with Louisiana LNG under a 20-year deal.
