Serbia's student list rallies in Belgrade as campaign closes before Sunday's vote

6 sources

Tens of thousands backed the Student List in central Belgrade on Thursday, while longtime leader Aleksandar Vučić rallied elsewhere in the capital. Serbia votes on Sunday.

Marchers waving "Students are winning" flags converged on Slavija Square, according to AFP, as the leaderless list seeks to end 14 years of rule by Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). Vučić addressed supporters at a sports hall and repeated that the movement is a foreign-funded coup attempt. The movement grew from protests after the Novi Sad station canopy collapse in November 2024, which killed 16 people.

Intimidation reports

Reuters reports beatings, cyberattacks and threats in the run-up. Civil society groups cited by AFP also warn of arrests and misuse of public resources; Vučić and his allies deny accusations of voter bribery and violence.

Poll and quiet period

An Ipsos poll for Politika (3,624 respondents, 20 to 22 October) gives Vučić's list 47.4 per cent and the Student List 40 per cent. Campaigning is banned from midnight until polls close at 8 pm on Sunday.

Other opinions

State-affiliated Politika stresses the poll lead and Vučić's claim that students dodge questions on Russia sanctions and Srebrenica, while Al Jazeera and AFP call the list his most serious challenger.
