Magnitude 7 earthquake kills at least 16 in northern Tibet

7 sources

A magnitude 7 earthquake struck northern Tibet late on Thursday, and Chinese state media report at least 16 dead. More than 300 houses collapsed.

The quake hit at 22:33 local time on Thursday, 22 October, in a sparsely populated, high-altitude county of Nagqu, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The US Geological Survey places the epicentre in mountains about 390 km north-east of Lhasa, and Le Monde names Maru township in Baqen district. Xinhua and CCTV report at least 16 dead, but injury counts differ: 32 in Xinhua's figure cited by Folha, 65 in CCTV's figure cited by Le Monde, 11 of them seriously. Reports give the depth as 10 km or 18 km. It is the strongest quake in China since January 2024.

Rescue in freezing conditions

Xi Jinping called for a maximum rescue effort, citing altitude, cold and aftershock risk, according to CCTV. Hundreds of firefighters, rescuers and police and more than 300 soldiers were sent, with a drone for reconnaissance, while power, telecom services and some roads are damaged. Night temperatures were forecast at -6 °C.

Aftershocks

The USGS recorded two aftershocks of magnitude 5.2 and 5, about 40 minutes and three and a half hours after the main quake. CENC logged further tremors of around magnitude 3 and 4.
