Symbolic imageDeath toll passes 150 after drone strike on Abyei market
A drone strike on Amiet market in the disputed Abyei region on Monday has killed at least 153 people, according to local authorities. They and South Sudan blame the Sudanese army.
The attack began around 10:00 on Monday, 19 October, when a first bomb ignited fuel depots at the market. Trader Mohamed Abdullah, a Somali national, told Le Monde he sheltered in the bush and counted 12 bombs, one every ten minutes. Local authorities give a provisional toll of 153, mostly Sudanese, including three Somalis and an unknown number of South Sudanese. Chief administrator Justice Charles Abyei Jok says the bodies are burned and hard to identify. The army says it targeted fuel tankers.
Drone war reaches residential areas
Al Jazeera reports that drone attacks by the army and the Rapid Support Forces have killed more than 160 people across Sudan in recent days. Analyst Abu Bakr Abdel Rahim says army drones target command centres, fuel and ammunition depots and supply routes linked to Libya, Chad and South Sudan. In Imtidad Nasser east of Khartoum, an RSF drone attack killed three children.
