Oil climbs to five-month high as global stocks fall

12 sources

Brent rose above $110 on Gulf escalation fears, and global stocks fell on Thursday.

Brent reached a five-month high of $112 on Tuesday and stayed above $105, and the Wall Street Journal reports oil rose more than 2% on Thursday. Asian markets fell that day, Handelsblatt reports, as worries about escalation in the Gulf grew after the US withdrew diplomats from Saudi Arabia because of Houthi attacks. Reuters reports that the IMF expects the economies of the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan to contract by 1.3% in 2026.

China's CSI 300 enters bear market

The index fell 1.7% to just under 4000 points, more than 20% below its June peak of 5064, and has declined for ten weeks in a row. Lombard Odier strategist Homin Lee says that without new policy or technology impulses the directionless market could last until early 2027.

Airlines brace for fuel costs

Ryanair chief Michael O'Leary warns that fares could rise 10 to 20% next year, since only 15% of next summer's fuel is hedged at old prices. Eurowings is considering short-time work for the winter, and Condor has cancelled its Dubai flights, FAZ reports.
