Aramco evacuates headquarters and US pulls diplomats as Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia intensify

Houthi attacks hit a Saudi airport and an oil field this week. Aramco and Washington both scaled back their presence in the kingdom.

A Houthi attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam on Wednesday, 21 October, killed two people, a Saudi citizen and an Indian national, and wounded eight, Reuters reported; operations resumed on Thursday. The energy ministry said air defenses intercepted a drone aimed at Aramco's Shaybah oilfield, where two people died. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree also claimed strikes on Aramco sites in Yanbu and on the defense ministry in Riyadh, which Saudi authorities did not confirm.

Aramco and Washington scale back

Six people told Reuters that Aramco ordered staff to leave its Dhahran headquarters and work remotely. The US State Department ordered non-emergency employees and their families out of Saudi Arabia, and four US officials said other Gulf missions would send family members home. Saudi Arabia's TASI index fell 2.5% and Brent rose to $111.88, the highest since May.

Fighting inside Yemen

Yemen's internationally recognized government said its troops may strike Houthi rallies as "legitimate military targets". The Houthis threatened serious consequences if Saudi Arabia attacks tribes that support them.

Israeli help for Riyadh

An Israeli defense official told the Jerusalem Post that IDF intelligence aids Saudi operations against the Houthis through US mediation.
