Symbolic imagePutin frees US citizen and accepts trilateral Ukraine talks after Witkoff visit
Putin received US envoy Steve Witkoff in St Petersburg on Wednesday and freed American Stephen Hubbard. The Kremlin says it is ready to resume trilateral talks with the US and Ukraine.
The nearly three-hour meeting was Witkoff's ninth in person with Putin. The Kremlin says technical-level talks could be held in Abu Dhabi on or after 10 November, on security guarantees for Ukraine and Russia after the war; the last US-mediated round was in February. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the "new approaches" from Kyiv and the EU that Witkoff raised held little of use and "do not entirely satisfy us". Reuters reports that Zelensky supports a ceasefire and trilateral talks.
Hubbard freed
Putin announced at the start of the meeting that Hubbard was at Pulkovo Airport, citing humanitarian reasons. A Russian court convicted him of mercenary activity in 2024; Meduza reports he joined Ukraine's territorial defence in 2022, while the State Department calls his detention wrongful. Trump said no swap was needed, though his administration recently waived a round of sanctions.
Oslo prelude
On Tuesday in Oslo, Witkoff met Zelensky and European and NATO representatives; a US official said Ukraine brought new ideas. Kushner, joining virtually, repeated Trump's demand to stop strikes on Russian diesel refineries, and Zelensky offered to stop if Russia reciprocates, Axios reported.
