Putin received US envoy Steve Witkoff in St Petersburg, freed American Stephen Hubbard, and the Kremlin says it is ready to resume trilateral talks with the US and Ukraine. On the ground, Russian drones killed three people in the Kyiv and Kharkiv regions, local officials said. UK inflation reached 3.5% in September, driven by motor fuel, and the Financial Times says this strengthens expectations of a Bank of England rate rise in November. Elon Musk said SpaceX and Tesla are exploring a merger.

A drone strike on Amiet Market in the disputed Abyei region killed at least 153 people on Monday. South Sudan blames Sudan's army, which says it targeted fuel tankers. Watch Sunday, when Brazil holds its presidential run-off and Serbia its parliamentary election.
