Saudi Arabia extended the closure of Riyadh's King Khalid airport until Saturday after repeated Houthi strikes, the deadliest attack on Saudi soil in a decade. Iran has offered to mediate. The Gulf is under pressure from a second direction as well: Iran's Revolutionary Guards say they hit a third supertanker in the Strait of Hormuz within two days, while indirect talks with Washington continue through mediators.
In Ukraine, Trump announced an energy ceasefire on Sunday that caught Kyiv unaware. Russian attacks then hit a Kyiv high-rise and Kharkiv's power and housing on Monday, and the Kremlin rejected Zelensky's 60-day ceasefire idea. EU foreign ministers answered by approving a 22nd sanctions package with nearly 1,600 new listings. London blamed Iran's Revolutionary Guards for the plot against RAF Fairford and sanctioned two Iranians, which Tehran denies. In Ethiopia, federal forces and an allied militia entered Adwa in Tigray on Sunday, and North Korea fired several ballistic missiles on Monday.
Brent crude rose above $106 a barrel on Monday, its first time there since late September, on fears of new attacks in Ukraine and the Middle East. The EU and China agreed to cap Chinese hybrid imports at 350,000 cars a year from December. IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva said AI investment is keeping global growth around 3%, and Meta unveiled its Muse Wonder models, which it says rival OpenAI and Anthropic.
Largely overlooked, a rights group says an air strike on a Sudanese gold mine near the Egyptian border killed at least 72 miners; Egypt has not commented. On Tuesday, watch whether the EU opens new negotiation chapters with Ukraine.
