Symbolic imageEthiopia and Eritrea trade accusations of aggression as fighting spreads in Tigray
Ethiopia told the UN Security Council that Eritrea has launched an "all-out invasion" of northern Ethiopia. Eritrea denies this and says Ethiopia is waging a war of aggression against it.
In a letter dated Thursday and shared with news agencies on Friday, 9 October, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos said Eritrean troops had advanced up to 60 kilometres into Tigray. He called this an act of aggression that engages Ethiopia's right to self-defence and demanded a withdrawal. Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel rejected the claim on X, saying Ethiopia has pursued an unprovoked war against Eritrea for more than three years. Eritrea also denies Ethiopia's allegation that it backs the TPLF, part of an alliance of seven armed groups that has tried to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since September.
Fighting in Tigray
Over the past week Ethiopia's army has pushed back the TPLF and seized the Tigrayan capital, Mekelle. Witnesses told AFP that rebels also lost Shire and Adigrat, and that Eritrean troops were reportedly seen in Adigrat before Ethiopian drone strikes hit them.
Sea access and broken ties
Yemane accuses Addis Ababa of using the conflict to seize the Eritrean port of Assab, citing Ethiopian officials' statements, while Abiy has repeatedly claimed a right to sea access. Last week Ethiopia closed its embassy in Asmara and ordered 10 Eritrean diplomats out, and Eritrea responded by severing ties.
