Symbolic imageGerman spy chiefs warn of violent conflict with Russia as Europe prepares
Germany's intelligence chiefs told parliament on Monday that Russia's shadow war has entered a more dangerous phase. Estonia is moving troops towards its border.
In a public Bundestag hearing on Monday, 5 October, BND president Martin Jäger said Germany risks being drawn into a violent conflict with Russia. He cited the 4 August attempt on Leipzig/Halle airport, where an explosives-laden drone was found beside a Ukrainian cargo aircraft; Berlin blamed Russia on 1 September. Domestic intelligence chief Sinan Selen said transport, communications, defence industry and military sites are targets and that Russia accepts civilian casualties. Reuters reports Kallas saying hybrid attacks put lives at risk across Europe.
Estonia moves east
The FT reports that Estonia is permanently moving its First Brigade from Tapa to Jõhvi, 50km from the Russian border. A senior military intelligence official there said deterrence is not working.
