Symbolic imageRussian drone hits Kyiv bridge during Merz visit as Ukraine adds anti-drone turrets
A Russian drone hit a bridge in Kyiv during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit on Sunday. Ukraine says it is installing gun turrets against Russian jet-powered drones.
On Sunday, 4 October, a Russian drone struck a bridge in Kyiv and injured two people while Merz and a business delegation agreed cooperation worth about €6.6 billion, FAZ reports. Handelsblatt headlines Merz saying the "barbaric attacks" on Ukraine's population must stop. On Monday, Russian air strikes targeted port infrastructure in the Odesa region, the governor said, according to Reuters.
Turrets against jet drones
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv has installed 12 or more turrets and will add eight more fifty-calibre guns in the Kyiv region. Jet-powered drones fly three to four times faster than conventional ones, Meduza notes. First results of a small-missile programme are expected by the end of October.
Kharkiv bombed
Russian guided bombs hit Kharkiv on Monday afternoon, killing three and injuring 39, said Oleh Syniehubov, head of the regional military administration. The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented.
Front line
Meduza finds that Russia has encircled no major Ukrainian group despite its claims. Open-source videos show Ukrainian forces still fighting at the first Russian defence line near Lyman, not the third phase of Operation Vivaldi that Kyiv announced.
