Gaza City police chief killed in Israeli drone strike

An Israeli drone killed Gaza City's police chief, Colonel Jamal Abu Kamil, on Thursday, a day after Israel resumed air raids. A second strike killed one person in Khan Younis.

Three missiles hit Abu Kamil's car and wounded two others in what Gaza's interior ministry called an assassination. Israel's military said it removed a threat, claiming without evidence that the 43-year-old was a Hamas commander involved in the October 2023 attacks; Gaza's police said he had no role beyond policing. The pause of more than a week followed US pressure, and Netanyahu rejected the US disarmament-for-withdrawal plan on Sunday, saying troops would stay until Hamas was 'genuinely disarmed'.

Kushner's trip

Jared Kushner travels to Israel next week with Board of Peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov to advance the plan, Axios reported; a US official cited Israeli doubts before October's election.

Ankara and Cairo warn

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, meeting Egypt's Badr Abdelatty in El Alamein on Thursday, said both expect Washington to press Israel, or Turkey, Qatar and Egypt would take 'radical steps'.

Armed struggle loses support

A Palestinian Centre for Policy and Survey Research poll this month put support for armed struggle at 27 per cent, down from 41 per cent in October, while 44 per cent favour negotiations.
