Where things stand

Ankara and Cairo are putting their ties on a regular footing: foreign ministers Hakan Fidan and Badr Abdelatty co-chaired the second Türkiye-Egypt Joint Planning Group in El Alamein on Thursday, and Fidan also met Egypt's intelligence chief Hassan Rashad.

Turkey and Egypt coordinate their relationship through a Joint Planning Group co-chaired by the two foreign ministers, Hakan Fidan for Ankara and Badr Abdelatty for Cairo. The format is new, with only a handful of rounds held so far, and it runs alongside contacts between the two governments' intelligence services.

On the same day Fidan met Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy and the head of Egypt's General Intelligence Service, Maj. Gen. Hassan Rashad.
