Baltic cable sabotage
Where things stand
A Helsinki court on Thursday sentenced the Russian captain of the cargo ship Fitburg to three and a half years in prison over damage to two undersea telecommunications cables in the Gulf of Finland. An Azerbaijani crew member received two years and 10 months.
Undersea power, telecom and gas cables in the Baltic Sea have been damaged repeatedly in recent years, and several incidents have been linked to ships passing over them. Finland and other Baltic states suspect sabotage and have investigated vessels and crews, while Russia is widely suspected of involvement in such cases.
