Three killed in strikes on Kyiv suburb as Russian forces press toward Sloviansk

3 sources

Russian air attacks on a suburb of Kyiv killed at least three people on Saturday, and a drone damaged a football stadium in Odesa. In the Donbass, Russian troops are closing in on the twin cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

What happened

  • Ukrainian maps such as Deepstate show Russian-held territory 15 kilometres east of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, within FPV drone range.
  • Russian glide bombs and drones hit both cities daily; main roads are covered with nets, trenches run through Kramatorsk's centre.
  • On Wednesday the regional governor announced the evacuation of about 525 children; officials estimate nearly 85,000 civilians still remain.
  • Naftogaz says seven oil and gas production sites in eastern Ukraine were damaged overnight into Friday, 7 August, and shut down.
  • The US Senate approved a sanctions bill against Russia, according to FAZ's liveblog.

The view from outside

German reporting concentrates on the erosion of civilian life in the twin cities: most petrol stations destroyed, the remaining ones rationing fuel, most restaurants closed, while the Kramatorsk market still opens despite being hit twice.

What could happen next

  • No general evacuation order for Kramatorsk and Sloviansk has been issued; FAZ expects one to follow.
  • Russia's claim of eight settlements taken between 1 and 7 August is not independently confirmed.
  • Naftogaz has not said when the seven damaged production sites could resume operations.
  • The further path of the US sanctions bill remains open.
How the camps see it
  • Russia: The defence ministry says its troops took eight settlements in the Kharkiv, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia regions between 1 and 7 August and are advancing on the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration.

  • Ukraine: The leadership concedes, according to TASS, that the situation near Sloviansk is difficult and that the defence of the Donbass must be strengthened.
