Strike on holiday camp in occupied Zaporizhzhia kills children; Kyiv under missile fire

3 sources

Moscow-installed officials in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region said a nighttime attack on a holiday camp area at Kyrylivka on the Sea of Azov killed at least eight to eleven people, among them children, and injured more than a dozen. On the same weekend Ukraine reported deadly Russian drone strikes in the Sumy and Zaporizhzhia regions, and German media reported missile fire on Kyiv. It follows a Friday in which Russian strikes killed 15 people in Ukraine.

Russia-Ukraine strikes

What happened

During the night into Saturday, 25 July 2026, a holiday camp area at Kyrylivka on the Sea of Azov coast near Melitopol, in the part of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region held by Russia, was hit. Yevgeny Balitsky, the head of the occupation administration, said on Telegram that people were killed, including children, and blamed Ukrainian forces. The reported tolls differ by time and outlet: Daily Sabah, citing agencies, reported eight dead including two children and 14 injured; Folha de S.Paulo, citing Reuters, reported at least 11 dead including four children and 16 injured. Russia's Investigative Committee opened a terrorism inquiry, according to state agency RIA. Kyiv did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Reuters reported. In Ukrainian-held territory, the governor of Sumy region, Oleh Hryhorov, said three people were killed when a Russian drone struck a civilian facility and set off a large fire; the victims were drivers for the courier company Nova Poshta. Russia's Defence Ministry said it had attacked a storage and launch site for Ukrainian drones in Sumy region. In the city of Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone strike late Friday hit a shopping centre and started a fire across about 500 square metres, injuring several people, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said. Handelsblatt reported Kyiv under Russian missile fire, without further detail in the available text. Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces struck a Russian warship and vessels in the Caspian Sea used to move military cargo linked to Iran, an oil refinery in Tyumen more than 2,000 kilometres from Ukraine, a plant in Kirov making projectile components and a logistics site in Yekaterinburg. Tyumen governor Alexander Moor said emergency crews were containing the damage. Romania's Defence Ministry said its air force shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace over an unpopulated area near the Ukrainian border; President Nicușor Dan said an F-16 pilot downed it, a day after another drone was shot down near Padina.

The camps

Moscow and its administration in occupied Zaporizhzhia present the camp strike as deliberate killing of civilians: Balitsky said the enemy 'saw and understood who it was targeting', and the Investigative Committee is treating it as terrorism. Kyiv gave no immediate response to the accusation; Ukraine's public account of the weekend, delivered by Zelenskyy, concentrated on military and industrial targets deep inside Russia and on Russian drone strikes that killed courier drivers in Sumy and burned a shopping centre in Zaporizhzhia city. Russia's Defence Ministry describes its own Sumy strike as hitting a drone storage and launch site, not a civilian one. As Reuters notes, both governments deny attacking civilians in the war that began with Russia's invasion in February 2022.

The view from outside

Outlets outside the two belligerents place the day inside a pattern rather than on one side of it. Daily Sabah, in Turkey, headlines the exchange itself — deaths in occupied Zaporizhzhia alongside deaths in Ukrainian-held Sumy — and reads the sequence as eroding the prospect of a negotiated end to a war now in its fifth year, while giving weight to the spillover onto NATO territory in Romania. Brazil's Folha de S.Paulo, running the Reuters account, foregrounds the civilian toll but devotes as much space to the widening reach of Ukraine's long-range drone campaign and to Russia's domestic fuel shortages, quoting deputy prime minister Alexander Novak that supply is stabilising but remains 'quite difficult' in parts of Siberia.

What's new

The previous day, Friday 24 July, Russian strikes killed 15 people in Ukraine: a rare daytime missile strike on a private training ground in the Bucha district of Kyiv region during the 'Armada' drone-manufacturers' exhibition left about 10 dead and close to 100 injured, and air bombs hit Sloviansk. What changed over the weekend is the direction of the deadliest single reported incident, which occupation authorities attribute to Ukraine and which fell on a holiday site with children present. New also is the depth of Ukraine's reported reach — Tyumen, Kirov, Yekaterinburg and the Caspian Sea — and Zelenskyy's warning on Friday evening that intelligence pointed to Russia readying missiles for a large-scale attack within 48 hours, followed by reports of missile fire on Kyiv. Zelenskyy further claimed Russia intends to bring in another 30,000 North Korean soldiers and has been preparing the Voronezh region for them since June; around 14,000 were sent to Kursk in 2024. This claim is unconfirmed by other sources here.

What could happen next

The casualty figures from Kyrylivka may be revised again as occupation authorities update them, and the Russian terrorism inquiry could become the basis for a sustained campaign presenting Ukraine as a deliberate attacker of civilians, with Kyiv either contesting the account or describing a military target in the area. If Zelenskyy's warning of a prepared large-scale missile salvo holds, further strikes on Ukrainian cities would follow the Kyiv missile fire, while Ukraine's long-range drone strikes on refineries and plants continue to test Russia's fuel supply, which Moscow's own energy authorities describe as strained in parts of Siberia. Repeated drone incursions into Romanian airspace, twice intercepted in two days, keep open the question of how NATO members bordering the war respond to airspace violations that are becoming routine rather than exceptional.

How the camps see it
  • Russia and its occupation administration: Calls the Kyrylivka camp strike a deliberate Ukrainian attack on civilians and has opened a terrorism investigation, while describing its own strikes, such as in Sumy, as hitting military drone infrastructure.

  • Ukraine: Gave no immediate response to the camp accusation and presents its weekend operations as strikes on Russian military, naval, energy and logistics targets, while reporting Russian drone attacks that killed civilians in Sumy and Zaporizhzhia.
