Ukrainian drones kill five near Moscow as Wildberries warehouses burn

5 sources

Ukrainian drones killed five people in an industrial zone in the Moscow region overnight into Tuesday and set a Wildberries logistics warehouse ablaze in the Leningrad region. A day earlier, a drone came down on a packed beach near Gelendzhik, killing seven, among them children.

What happened

  • Fires broke out in the Novoselki industrial zone in Chekhov district; a substation and administrative building were damaged.
  • Wildberries evacuated its Krasny Bor staff in advance; the single injured person worked at a neighbouring Lenta warehouse.
  • Meduza counts 20 Wildberries warehouses hit since mid-July; another was targeted at Emmaus, northwest of Moscow.
  • Moscow's mayor said 184 drones flew toward the region on Tuesday, 18 downed near the city.
  • Russian strikes killed three in Sumy, including girls aged five and ten, and an 89-year-old woman in Mykolaiv.

The view from outside

AFP, carried by Turkey's Daily Sabah, notes Wildberries handles up to 10 percent of Russian retail turnover and has faced sanctions-evasion accusations. The Hindu headlines the symmetry: at least five killed in each country.

What could happen next

  • Tolls diverge: Krasnodar authorities report 40 injured and three children killed, TASS 58 injured and four children.
  • The cause is contested: the governor cites drone debris; experts quoted by Agentstvo and The Insider suggest a shootdown, malfunction or jamming.
  • Agentstvo notes the beach faces the Rassvet resort, run by rocket maker NPO Mashinostroyeniya; the drone's intended target remains unknown.
How the camps see it
  • Russia: Officials call the strikes Ukrainian aggression against civilian infrastructure and attribute the beach deaths to falling drone debris.

  • Ukraine: Kyiv issued no public comment in this reporting; Ukrainian monitoring channels say a Russian mobile firing group shot the drone down over the beach.
