Kumamoto quake toll rises to 35 as search of wrecked mall continues

2 sources

Four days after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture, the death toll stood at 34 to 35 on Friday. Rescuers were still working through a wrecked shopping mall in heat above 35 degrees Celsius.

What happened

  • The quake struck Kyushu on Tuesday, 28 July, triggering an explosion at a shopping mall and toppling a factory chimney.
  • TASS reports more than 120 injured; the AP account speaks of dozens and lists one further death under investigation.
  • More than 79,000 households were without running water, and between 2,700 (AP) and 5,300 (TASS) without electricity.
  • More than 9,000 people stayed in evacuation shelters, where authorities installed extra power sources for air conditioning.

The view from outside

Only TASS gives a figure for the relief deployment, about 4,600 Japan Self-Defense Forces personnel. The AP report carried by Daily Sabah instead centres on industrial fallout: TSMC evacuated staff from its Kumamoto plant and is resuming operations after inspections found the structure sound.

What could happen next

  • Authorities have not determined how many people are missing; damage to homes and infrastructure is still being assessed.
  • Officials aimed to restore electricity to most homes by Friday evening; water for tens of thousands remains cut.
  • Fuel ran short after outages disabled petrol stations, leaving people sleeping in cars unable to run air conditioning.
  • AP reports concern that semiconductor and auto parts supply chains could be disrupted for months.
