Venezuela state puts number missing after earthquake at 1,338

La Guaira's governor said on Friday that 1,338 people remain missing after the earthquake that hit Venezuela in June. The count is based on a housing census of 95,080 people and on requests from residents.

What happened

  • Two series of tremors, magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, struck within about 40 seconds on Wednesday, 24 June.
  • Some 1,500 aftershocks followed; as of Saturday, 25 July, TASS reported 5,546 people killed and 16,740 injured.
  • Search teams rescued 6,462 people; 23,811 people were placed in 107 temporary camps, and 128,324 families received assistance.
  • The quake affected 8.55% of La Guaira: 180 buildings collapsed and 750 suffered structural damage, the governor said.

What could happen next

  • The missing figure rests on a housing registry and resident reports; any overlap with the confirmed dead is not stated.
  • Casualty numbers date from 25 July and were not updated in the governor's radio remarks on Friday.
  • About 20,000 people in the state remain in camps on three meals a day, with no rehousing timetable given.
  • Only the Russian state agency TASS carried the figures; they come from the governor and are not independently confirmed.
