Hong Kong court adds ten years to Joshua Wong's sentence

Hong Kong's High Court sentenced activist Joshua Wong on Thursday to ten years for conspiring to collude with foreign forces. He had been due for release in January 2027.

Judge William Tam said the national security law sets a minimum of ten years for the offence. Wong's guilty plea in September cut the starting point of 13 years, according to FAZ. The court cited Wong's lobbying abroad with exiled activist Nathan Law for hostile measures and sanctions against Hong Kong and Chinese officials, including 2019 meetings in Washington with Marco Rubio and Nancy Pelosi. It did not count it as mitigating that much of this activity predated the 2020 law. Wong told the court he never called for Hong Kong independence and received no foreign money. It is his second conviction under the law, after a term of four years and eight months imposed in November 2024 over an unofficial primary election.

Reactions

The US consulate in Hong Kong said it strongly condemns the sentence and demanded Wong's immediate release. China's foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun warned against "irresponsible" remarks on Hong Kong's judicial affairs. Amnesty International's Sarah Brooks called the law a tool to punish dissent, and Law said the verdict signals China's determination to quash hopes for freedom.
