Trump weighs Iran deal or escalation after midterm defeat

10 sources

Democrats won Congress in Tuesday's midterms, leaving Trump to choose between a negotiated exit from the Iran war and escalation. Tehran celebrates but signals no concessions.

Iranian officials presented the result as a public rejection of the war. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who leads the negotiations, wrote that Americans "said no to war", and Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, spoke of a political defeat for Trump in Washington. A statement attributed to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei calls anyone hoping for a change in US hostility through partisan shifts "seriously mistaken". The FAZ reads this as a sign that Tehran is not rushing toward a quick deal.

Qatar channel

The New York Times reports, citing officials, that Iran is reviewing "concrete proposals" on its nuclear program, suggesting Qatar-led mediation has had some success. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed the talks on Thursday, according to diplomatic sources.

Gulf states brace for strikes

Two sources close to Gulf governments say a weakened Trump has more incentive for a deal and a full-scale assault looks less likely, though limited strikes on nuclear sites remain possible. The FAZ reports the US had asked Gulf allies to prepare for a new wave of attacks; Trump now signals no hurry, and a third carrier is expected in late November. Revolutionary Guard adviser Sardar Bilali said any state helping US strikes would be a "legitimate target".

Other opinions

Breitbart relays CNN's Fareed Zakaria, who argues the US blockade is squeezing Iran and that Trump is as reluctant as Tehran to close a deal. Iranian state media instead frame the vote as an Iranian victory.
