Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday that four tankers hit mines south of the Strait of Hormuz and are still burning.
In a statement carried by state TV, the Guards called the tankers "non-compliant" and said they tried to use a prohibited passage. Two other vessels were also stopped: AFP quotes the Guards as saying they were "halted", while the Jerusalem Post reports they were seized. The Guards also said they shot down a drone over the strait. The account comes from Iran alone, and the sources do not independently confirm it.
Strikes claim and mixed signals from Tehran
According to AFP, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, 3 November, that the US had launched strikes on Iran, following reports of a raid on the island of Qeshm. Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran was "ready for battle with its finger on the trigger", while President Masoud Pezeshkian said his government sought a solution through dialogue and that no one would benefit from renewed war.
Earlier incidents in the strait
The Guards said on the same Tuesday that three other tankers hit mines after taking an unauthorised route. India's foreign ministry says an Indian was killed in a separate attack on a ship near Oman.
