Symbolic imageSaudi Arabia reports Houthi drone near Mecca as Taiz and Aden suffer
The Saudi-led coalition says it downed a Houthi drone near Mecca on Friday; the Houthis deny it. Taiz and Aden suffer.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said on Friday, 30 October, that the drone was shot down in the morning, after a cruise missile aimed at western Saudi Arabia had been downed earlier. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree called the account false and said the group targets only Saudi oil facilities and military bases. On Thursday the Houthis had claimed strikes on Ras Tanura, Rabigh, Abqaiq and two airports, without immediate Saudi confirmation. Le Monde cites UN figures of nearly 1,700 dead and over 281,000 displaced since early August.
Taiz short of water and oxygen
Governor Nabil Shamsan said only about 1,000 of the 35,000 cubic metres of water the city needs daily get through Houthi roadblocks, and that oxygen and food are running low. Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi says the way is open for aid.
Toxic-gas allegations
Yemen's government said on Friday it is investigating shells suspected of containing toxic substances, after reports of suffocation and loss of consciousness. A source in Taiz told The National the events were hard to determine.
Aden residents prepare
The Houthis have claimed attacks on Aden's airport, port and presidential palace. Residents told Al Jazeera they are stockpiling food and mapping escape routes.
