Symbolic imageBinance loses $6.3bn in record crypto theft, North Korea blamed
Hackers drained about $6.3bn from Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, in what analysts call the biggest crypto heist ever. TRM Labs attributes the attack to North Korea's TraderTraitor unit.
Binance said on Friday, 30 October, that a security breach had an estimated $6.3bn impact. TRM Labs says an attacker moved about $6.36bn out of Binance wallets on ten blockchains, most of it in about 20 minutes, and attributes the attack with high confidence to TraderTraitor, North Korea's elite hacking unit. Binance's initial investigation suggests a hacked laptop of one engineer let the attacker reach a system and make unauthorized withdrawals. Bloomberg reports that the FBI is scrutinising the case.
Freezing and compensation
Binance says it froze affected assets with partners and has located about $3bn so far; it gave no update on the other $3.3bn. Co-founder Yi He said the company would cover all hacking losses, and deposits and withdrawals were suspended.
Markets react
Bitcoin fell more than 3% to a six-week low of $76,368, and Coinbase shares slid 4.8% in extended US trading. HashKey's Tim Sun said investors may reassess the safety of assets held on centralized exchanges.
Not the first
The Financial Times notes that North Korean hackers stole $1.5bn from Bybit in February 2025, according to the FBI. Binance itself lost about $570mn in 2022.
