Symbolic imageLula wins fourth term as Bolsonaro refuses to concede
Lula won Brazil's run-off on Sunday with 51.79% to 48.21%. Flávio Bolsonaro rejects the result and says he will seek annulment.
After the run-off on Sunday, 25 October, Lula's win reversed a first-round gap (Bolsonaro 47%, Lula 45%), the first such comeback since direct elections returned in 1989, FAZ reports. Bolsonaro cites a two-hour extension of voting ordered by Supreme Court justice Cristiano Zanin, whom he called "Lula's lawyer", and offered no evidence of manipulation. According to El País, Lula's Workers' Party requested the extension and Bolsonaro's Liberal Party joined it, citing rain. Analysts quoted by the Jerusalem Post consider annulment unlikely given a margin of over 4 million votes.
Markets slump
On Monday the Ibovespa fell almost 17% at the open, halting trading for 30 minutes, and the real dropped 11.02% to 5.5956 per dollar, Le Monde reports. An analyst said Bolsonaro had been seen as more market-friendly.
Leaders congratulate Lula
Ursula von der Leyen, Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum, Chile's José Antonio Kast and China's Xi Jinping congratulated Lula. Le Monde notes that Donald Trump and Argentina's Javier Milei had not yet commented.
