Symbolic imageNurse killed in Congo as Ebola case in Nigeria is evacuated
Attackers killed a nurse responding to an Ebola alert in eastern Congo, the WHO says. Nigeria's first case was flown to Switzerland.
The attack on Saturday, 24 October, in Bafwasende, Tshopo province, also severely injured another health worker, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. Local authorities have not commented. Congo's tally is 9,876 cases and 4,803 deaths according to its public health institute (TASS), and 9,964 cases and 4,841 deaths as of 24 October according to the WHO (Premium Times).
Pattern of attacks
Last month a politician was beaten to death in North Kivu after defending the response, and residents burned tents at two health centres in May, Al Jazeera reports.
