Serbia votes in snap election as student list rivals Vučić's party

5 sources

Serbians voted on Sunday in a snap parliamentary election in which a student list born from the Novi Sad disaster could beat Aleksandar Vučić's party.

Polls ran from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time, with 6,451,292 registered voters choosing 250 lawmakers from 18 lists, according to TASS. Handelsblatt reports that the student list, running for the first time, and the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) each polled slightly above 40 percent, though institutes differ widely. Vučić resigned as president on 27 September, TASS says, and his party runs as United Serbia.

Coalition arithmetic

Even a student win would make a quick government unlikely, Handelsblatt writes. Vučić has ruled with smaller partners, while the student list rules out coalitions with opposition parties and would lack a partner without an absolute majority.

Movement born in Novi Sad

It is the first parliamentary vote since the canopy of the renovated Novi Sad station collapsed on 1 November 2024, killing 16 people. On Thursday tens of thousands rallied in Belgrade against what the movement calls sloppiness, abuse of power and corruption.

Other opinions

Bloomberg's headline casts Vučić as a "Putin-backed strongman" facing student dissent, while TASS describes the vote in neutral institutional terms and cites no polls.
