Brazil's run-off between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro ends in a dead heat

8 sources

Brazil votes on Sunday in a run-off between President Lula and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, with the final polls level. Nearly 159 million people are eligible to vote.

Flávio Bolsonaro won the first round on 4 October with 47% to Lula's 45%, but his lead has vanished. Datafolha, published on Thursday, has both at 50%. A CNT/MDA poll released on Saturday has Bolsonaro at 46.3% and Lula at 45%, within its 2.2-point margin of error. Most analysts still see Bolsonaro as the slight favourite, the Guardian reports.

Calmer final debate

In their last debate, on Globo on Friday, both candidates were more restrained. Bolsonaro accused Lula of letting organised crime grow and families sink into debt; Lula replied that Bolsonaro "doesn't know what hunger is". Le Monde reports that Bolsonaro's jibe about Lula's "nine fingers" drew criticism as discriminatory.

Rallies amid corruption claims

Lula addressed crowds in Rio and São Paulo on Saturday, while Bolsonaro supporters gathered in Minas Gerais. FAZ reports that both candidates filed bank and phone records with the electoral court to prove the other more corrupt; the judge has kept them sealed.

Other opinions

The Guardian cites Rio City Hall's figure of about 1.1 million people at Lula's Copacabana rally, while Al Jazeera speaks of hundreds of supporters there.
