Symbolic imageAlbania's Rama rejects resignation as student protests turn violent
Prime Minister Rama said he will not resign as student protests in Tirana continued. Police say 71 officers were injured.
The protests, driven by education costs, poor university conditions and weak job prospects, went on in Tirana on Thursday, 15 October, with police firing tear gas and water at demonstrators, according to Koha. Albanian police say 71 officers were hurt, some of them seriously. Koha also reports that 14 people are being treated at Tirana's Trauma Hospital, including a police officer from Shkodra under intensive monitoring. Protesters marched toward Parliament chanting for Rama to resign. Rama refused and, per Koha's headline, said the violence came from the opposition's hands, not the students'.
Opposition demands resignation
Berisha says Rama's resignation is the only solution to the crisis, Koha reports.
Unrest beyond the capital
Koha reports protests in other Albanian cities as well. Parliament met the same day to consider a bill on preventing money laundering.
