Symbolic imageKenya confirms second Ebola case as Congo health workers strike
Kenya confirmed a second Ebola case on Wednesday, a relative of its first patient. In Congo, where confirmed cases passed 9,000, the health workers' union called a nationwide strike.
Kenya's health ministry says both cases are linked, with no evidence of wider spread. The first patient, who had lived in Congo and travelled via Uganda to Nairobi, died in hospital on 5 October; 113 of 128 known contacts are traced and 108 are in quarantine. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the second patient was already in quarantine, which he took as proof that contact tracing works.
Health workers strike
Congo's health union called a nationwide strike over pay, working conditions and hazard allowances, saying the government gave no ground in talks. Coordinator Damien Muhindo says treatment centres keep only minimal service and that diagnosis, contact tracing and vaccine trials will suffer.
Toll and children
Congo's ministry counted 9,066 confirmed cases and 4,381 deaths by Tuesday; Handelsblatt cites 9,144 and 4,410. Doctors Without Borders says nearly one in four confirmed cases in North Kivu is a child, and 24 of 30 children treated in Butembo between June and September died.
