Symbolic imageCourt frees Cockroach movement leaders after Delhi detentions
A court freed Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and two other leaders on Sunday, a day after police detained them in Delhi. The movement says its protests against the election chief will go on.
Dipke and the two leaders were detained when their plane landed in Delhi on Saturday, 10 October, as the movement planned to gather thousands at Jantar Mantar. On Sunday, 11 October, a court ordered their release on condition that they do not breach the peace for one year, according to the party's legal head Ratna Singh. Police locked down central Delhi and detained more than 2,000 people, most of whom were later released, police said. Influencer Dhruv Rathee was freed past midnight on condition that he join no further protests, an interior ministry official who declined to be named told Reuters.
Dispute over voter rolls
The movement accuses the election commission of manipulating voter lists in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP and demands the election chief's resignation. About 130 million names were reportedly struck off ahead of regional elections. The commission and the BJP reject the allegations.
